The Bottom Line Instant Messengering from any computer any where, with out worrying about firewalls, adware, or IT.
The last time I wrote in the writers corner was January 21st 2004. I dont spent much time here because I dont have the following I use to have. I never had a great following, but in the old days, I anything I would write would have around 50 people read it, today that number is only 25 if I am lucky. So I figure anything I write in the writers corner will quickly be lost among the 1,000s of pages. As matter of fact I checked this category and all the top reviews listed are from 2004, odd
So why am I here? Simple, I was told because a product I wanted to write a review for was FREE, I couldnt write a review for it. Had they charged for it, no problem
But since it is perfect and free I am relegated to the outpost of Epinions.com never to be heard from again, after the first 2 days.
So, what is MEEBO.COM?
Meebo.com is an Instant Messenger Aggregator, it takes all your Instant Message accounts and puts them in one easy to use package. If you are familiar with Trillian you know what I am talking about. But Meebo.com is not Trillian because it works from any web browser.
Most Instant Messenger programs now have a web based application, they figured this out very early in the game went students wanted to use their Instant Messenger at the school computer labs and for some strange reason, system admins didnt want people installing software on their computers. I believe ICQ was for first to create a web baserd ICQ2Go version, but I could be wrong.
Here are all the Instant messengers MEEBO.com aggregates
AOLIM: (The best known)
Yahoo! IM (Yahoos AOL wantabe)
MSN IM (Microsofts Yahoo wantabe)
ICQ (I seek you the grand daddy of them all)
Google Talk (The new thang)
Jabber (I have never heard of it)
Meebo.com can work one of two ways.
You can go to the website and type in your username and password for each of the above messengers, or you can create an account and have the account remember your usesname and passwords saving a lot of typing. In addition if you have a Meebo.com account you also get the benefit of it remembering your chat history.
Meebo.com applet
A really cool feature (you can see it on my profile page) is the ability to chat from a website to a person using Meebo.com, even if I am off line when I go on-line Ill get your message.
The look.
Meebo.com is a stand alone webpage with a clean blue background and your buddy list staying in a corner, but you can move it resize it, etc just as if it was a stand alone app. Or you can create the buddy list as a stand alone web page, by it self. I like meebo in the background and not as a stand alone page.
When a message comes in the tab in Firefox changes from Meebo.com to the first few words of the text message.
I have not tried it in IE, but I am told it works in Opera, Firefox, OS 10, and pretty much anything else on the market.
If you have multiple IM accounts and want to be able to IM from any location, with out installing lots of software or logging on to a lot of Instant message web based sites, them Meebo.com is worth a Go.
encryption
Author update: After using Meebo.com more I noticed that the entire Meebo.com page (IE all the communication you do) is encrypted added to the privacy you might need when dealing with Instant Messengering.
BTW Meebo.com stands for nothing.
