        Or how about Maher Arar, a Canadian citizen, who we detained in 2002. At the time he was suspected of being a terrorist, but without any trial we "rendered" him to Syria where he was tortured and held for 10 months.

        The military goes to great lengths to minimize civilian casualties. I know of many situations where we were fired upon and did not return fire due to the high risk of civilian casualties.

        Salim Hamdan was sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison and given credit for time served. He'll be back in Afghanistan in 6 months. That's a pretty far cry from "essentially going to be at Guantanamo for the rest of his life".

        Maher Arar - this was a pretty raw deal but he was paid $10.5 million Canadian by the Canadian government. While I agree that's hardly compensation for a year of torture, it's something.

      Chinese internet activists are known for hunting people down in the real world (in the flesh, hence the name) and harassing them, sometimes to the point of driving them to suicide.
      If he really soiled China's national honor by causing it to potentially lose two gold medals, that's a real possibility. That's exactly the sort of people they go after.
