Thursday 13 episode 2

Thirteen Memorable Vacations

1. Drive to the west coast
The vacation of a lifetime! I was 17, my sister 13. With our parents we drove from Michigan to Washington and Oregon. We visited family and saw sights I'd never even imagined before. I think Glacier National Park was the best of many, many bests.

2. Trinidad and Tobago
The best way to go to another country is to go with a native. Our friend's family welcomed us warmly and we had a fabulous time. I have only 3 words: Shark and Bake! Makes my mouth water just to think about it.

3. Florida
Our honeymoon. Need I say more? OK, I will. Two of our 4 anniversaries have been celebrated there. Hard to imagine we've been married for 16 years already!

4. Oregon
Our second anniversary! We spent a week looking at waterfalls and Crater Lake and then a week on the coast. We even got to visit my aunt. Great vacation.

5. Lake Superior Circle Tour
This was just Mom, Dad and me. I was 18, just graduated from high school. We drove all the way around the lake and stopped at every waterfall we could find!

6. Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel
(It's pronounced Mackinaw.) We went to a "Celebrate Your Marriage" conference and stayed at the Grand Hotel. If you look at the picture, you'll see a few rooms way up high above the entrance with balconies. We had one of those rooms! First time I'd ever been in the hotel.

7. Jamaica
This was a working vacation. We went on a missions trip to the island. We helped build a school. And stayed at a small resort! We had a couple days R&R after the work was done so we did get to climb Dunns River Falls.

8. Washington
As in the state of. My daughter and son-in-law took my two grandbabies and went to school in Kirkland, WA. Across Lake WA from Seattle. We had several terrific trips out there. I even bought a fish and got to watch them toss it at the Pike Place Fish Market. Be sure to check out the fun stuff page!

9. Virginia
After graduation the kids moved to VA not far south of DC. We've had great times there, too. Including trips into DC to visit monuments and museums. Our last trip down was on Amtrak. We loved it!

10. Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island
This trip was with the Senior Adult Ministry(SAM) folks. They needed drivers and we were very happy to go. We spent a day on the island and took the Carriage Tour and visited the butterfly house. Back in Mackinaw City, we had domino tournaments. Don't know when I've laughed so much. What a blast!

11. Bahamas
Another working vacation. This was years ago. Long before I met my husband. I had to install and train a small company on the use of accounting software written by our company. They suggested I come on a tour package. They only needed me for 2 days and I could take the 3rd day for whatever I pleased. It was my first trip South of Maryland. I was astonished at the vegetation. Back in the office, I had an umbrella plant about 6 inches high. Outside my 3rd floor window was the BLOSSOM of an umbrella plant! I didn't know they could get that big or flower. It' the only vacation I've ever taken by myself.

12. Camping "Up North"
When I was a kid, we used to camp in the UP. For those of you unfortunate enough to live outside Michigan, that's the Upper Peninsula. We stayed in several different National Forest campgrounds. I loved being away from 'civilization'. We had a Coleman stove, but we roasted marshmallows over the campfire. I loved it.

13. The Lake
This blessed place was purchased in the 1950s by my husband's grandparents. Two-hundred miles north of us and in the middle of the woods, it's now the retirement home of my in-laws. They've built a beautiful home there and still have the original cottage for a guest house. It's such a peaceful place and they always make us feel welcome.

I so agree with seeing the west coast for the first time. And driving around a curve, and seeing the Pacific ocean from the driver's seat for the first time,........it's a thrill of a lifetime.

My 13 is posted, come join me?
Happy Thursday.

Glacier is nice.

I'd love to have a native guide. I'd love to go to even a third of the places you've gone.

I must ask -- what part of Florida? Miami is so different from Tampa is so different from Tallahassee. Where did you honeymoon? (Thanks for visiting my TT)

I loved Glacier National Park when I visited many moons ago.

One of my favorite vacations was to the Canadian Rockies and I would love to visit again in the summer.

Thanks for visiting my blog. ~Alasandra

The cabin in the woods in the "up" sounds great. I'm sure it is cool enough to make a summer stay fun.

You mentioned driving the West coast. My parents took me on just about the same trip with in was, I think 13 or 14. I had my birthday out there in LA at a relatives house. That is a wonderful trip! We came from Michigan when we did it too.
